Significance of G 7 Summit

What is the Group of Seven (G7)?

1. It is an intergovernmental economic organization consisting of 7 large advanced economies of the world.

2. The members include – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Where was the 45th G7 Summit held?

1. The 45th G7 Summit was held on 24-26 August 2019, in Biarritz, France.

Who were the participants at 45th G 7 summit?

1. The Summit had invitees that included – Australia, Burkina Faso, Chile, Egypt, India, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Spain.

2. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi was a special invitee at the summit.

Which were the key matters discussed by India at the 45th G7 Summit?

Kashmir Issue 

1. India clarified that Kashmir is an internal issue.

2. It also stated that issues with Pakistan on Kashmir will be resolved bilaterally and appreciated non-interference from any third party.

3. India made it clear that the process of removal of Article 370 has been handled by India in a mature way internally.

4. It stated that the restrictions imposed in Jammu and Kashmir to maintain law and order situation will be removed slowly with time.

Climate Change and Biodiversity

1. Despite facing developmental and poverty issues, India has focussed on climate change issues.

2. India’s efforts of placing restrictions on the use of single-use plastics, focus on harnessing solar energy, water conservation, protection of flora and fauna were pointed out.

3. India is expected to achieve most of the COP 21 goals by 2021.

India also pointed out its focus on various matters including digitalization (by Digital India campaign), artificial intelligence, tackling terrorism, promoting the use of renewable energy, removal of inequality, etc.

How well did India use this summit?

1. India has focussed on synchronizing agendas of G 7 with agendas of India.

2. This was done by trying to bridge the gap between G 20 (of which India is a member) and G7.

3. The inclusion of several other nations along with the ‘rich’ nations of G7 also facilitated it.
