What Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is?

1. It is a Eurasian political, economic and security alliance, formed on 15th June 2001 in Shanghai, China.

2. The leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan formed it.

3. At present, it has 8 member states and includes India and Pakistan also.

4. It has 4 observer states – Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia.

5. It has 6 dialogue partners.

6. There are 4 guest attendants as well – ASEAN, Commonwealth of Independent States, Turkmenistan and United Nations.

7. Summits of the Heads of States are held annually at alternating venues.

When and where did the 2019 SCO summit take place?

1. It was held between 14-15 June 2019.

2. It was held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

3. Prime Minister Modi has attended the summit representing India at the forum.

1. India and Pakistan were added as its members in 2017 at summit held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

2. It is significant for India as it focuses on political, economic and security issues in the Eurasian region.

3. It also focuses on the issues related to terrorism, external threats and promotes regional peace and stability.

4. Military exercises are conducted among the member nations to promote cooperation and coordination.

5. SCO has a Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS). It is a permanent organ of the SCO that serves to promote cooperation of member states against terrorism, extremism and separatism.

6. Information exchange in RATS is well acclaimed.

7. Issues of terrorism faced by India, especially in Jammu and Kashmir can be brought for discussion.
